THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University baseball team used a four-run sixth inning to take the lead for good as the Bulldogs won the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series on Sunday afternoon with a 10-6 victory over Alcorn State at the Bulldog Baseball Field.
Alcorn State (3-15 overall, 1-2 SWAC) struck first with three runs in the top of the second inning to take an early 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs answered in the bottom half of the second inning, plating two runs to cut into the deficit to 3-2. Alabama A&M continued to chip away in the third inning with another pair of runs to pull within one at 5-4.
Alabama A&M (7-14, 2-1) seized momentum in the sixth inning with a four-run rally to take control of the contest. The Bulldogs capitalized on key hits to turn a one-run deficit into an 8-5 advantage.
In the sixth,
AJ Anderson opened the frame with an infield hit and stole second. He took third and score on wild pitches.
Tervell Johnson reached on a one-out walk and after a pitching change,
Wilmer Cuevas drew a base on balls.
Zak Rice drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch plated Johnson from third and
Chris Walker singled to right to plate Cuevas. With two down,
Brycen Hammonds singles to left center as Rice scored to give AAMU the 8-5 advantage.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 10-5 before Alcorn State pushed across a run in the ninth to account for the final score.
Alabama A&M finished the afternoon with 10 runs on 10 hits, highlighted by several strong offensive performances.
Tervell Johnson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three RBI, including a triple.
Brycen Hammonds added two hits and three RBI, while
AJ Anderson scored three runs and recorded two hits, including a double.
Chris Walker also contributed with two hits and an RBI, and
Tarris Murray added a hit and a double.
On the mound,
Rynzo Crutcher (1-1) earned his first-career victory in relief after tossing three innings and limiting the Braves' offense. Starter
Brady Baxter worked the opening three innings, while
Bryce Dolce closed the game with three innings to earn his first save of the season.
Alcorn State was led offensively by Julian Jarrett, who drove in three runs for the Braves.
