THE HILL | For the first time in program history, the Alabama A&M University women's basketball team will be competing in the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) as the Bulldogs will visit BYU on Thursday night.
Tip-off against the Cougars is set for 8 p.m. (CT) from the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah and the game will be streamed on ESPN+ as Spencer Linton and Kristen Kozlowski will have the call.
Alabama A&M (22-10) posted a program-best 17-game winning streak during the regular season, which was the longest in the Division I era for the Bulldogs. In addition, the Maroon & White reached postseason play by winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season championship, also marking a first in program history.
AAMU defeated Florida A&M in the conference tournament quarterfinals, before falling to eventual SWAC Tournament champions Southern in the semifinals.
Kalia Walker was selected to the SWAC All-Tournament team after averaging 19.0 points, 4.0 boards, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals in the two games played. Her 31-point performance in the quarterfinals helped the Bulldogs reach the tourney semifinals.
Alabama A&M ranks tops in the conference in several statistical categories, including free-throw attempts (fifth nationally), free throws made, (13
th nationally), scoring defense (14
th nationally), field goal percentage defense (17
th nationally), fouls per game, field goal percentage and scoring margin.
Walker is 34
th nationally in free-throw percentage and 54
th in free throws.
BYU (22-11) closed the season winning five of its final six games, with wins on the road at Utah, at Arizona State, at home over Colorado, and over Houston and Utah in the Big 12 Tournament first and second rounds. Their only loss came to No. 10 TCU in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals.
The Cougars, who had the most wins in in the program since the 2021-22 season, will make their second appearance in the WBIT, having played in the inaugural tournament in 2024. BYU faced Santa Clara on the road in the opening round, dropping the contest 60-59.
