Avila Repeats as SWAC Newcomer/Athlete of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama A&M University women's distance runner Laura Avila earned her third Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Track Newcomer of the Week and Track Athlete of the Week honor, the conference announced on Thursday.


Availa has broken several school records, one being a 43-year-old record in the 5000m on March 20th. This amazing accolade highlighted the opening day of the USF Alumni Invitational at USF Track and Field Stadium.


Avila also holds the Alabama A&M indoor school records in the 3000m, 5000m and distance medley relay, posting a time of 17:40.76. Her time broke the previous mark of 18:14.33 held by Serene Mitchell in 1983. 


Jackson State's Malayna Mallory was selected the SWAC's Field Athlete of the Week. 


Alabama A&M returns to action Mar. 27-28 in the UAB Spring Invite in Birmingham, Al.
