Alabama A&M 2021-22 Season in Review: Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – With the close of the 2021-22 campaign, the Alabama A&M Sports Information Office is producing a Season in Review for each of the program's 16 sports from the past year.
 
That series began with the fall season before progressing to the winter and spring campaigns. Each week reviews will be released on Mondays and Wednesdays until concluding with the final spring sport on Monday, July 18 and a Department Season in Review on Wednesday, July 20. Today we take a look back at the 2021-22 Women's Outdoor Track & Field season.

2021-22 Season in Review
  • Competed in six meets during season and faced off against teams such as Auburn, Vanderbilt, Alabama-Birmingham and Samford.
  • Delivered strong individual performances at the SWAC Championships (5/5-7)
Individual Achievements/Honors
  • Junior Shanique Masters (St. Catherine, Jamaica) had an impressive showing at the Margaret Simmons Invitational (3/26), placing 3-of-35 in the 400-meters, and stopping the clock at 58.76. One week later she would finish 11-of-49 in the 800-meters at the Hilltopper Relays (4/4) with a time of 2:23.55.
  • Masters improved her two lap time at the UAB Green and Gold Invitational by producing a sixth place finish ahead of 28 competitors  in 2:19.00. Masters then led the way for the women's side at the SWAC Championships with a 5-of-20 finish in the 800-meters with a time of 2:15.48. 
  • Junior Fabiona Jackson-Jenkins (Montgomery, Ala.) started her outdoor season by placing 15-of-35 in the 400-meters in a time of 1:02.00 at Margaret Simmons.
  • Graduate Jairyn Russell (Birmingham, Ala.) represented in the sprint events, placing 15-of-44 in a time of 12.59 at Margaret Simmons before a 14th place finish with a season-best time of 12.03 at the Music City Challenge (4/30).
  • Russell notched a 13-of-24 finish in the 100-meters at the SWAC Championships, stopping the clock at 12.16.
  • Junior Aneisha Ingram (Frankfield, Jamaica.) had strong performances during the season that included a 25-of-49 finish in the 800-meters (2:29.11) at the Hilltopper Relays before a 14-of-34 showing lowered her time to 2:26.97 in the same event at the Green and Gold Invite.
  • Ingram produced a Top-10 finish at the SWAC Championships as she placed eighth ahead of 12 competitors with a season-best time of 2:16.91.
  • Freshman Taylor Wingo (D'Iberville, Miss.) notched a 21-of-56 outing in the 800-meters at Margaret Simmons, finishing in a time of 2:31.10 before improving her time at the Hilltopper Relays (2:26.55) to finish 17-of-49.
  • Wingo ran her best time of the season at the SWAC Championships in a time of 2:22.22 with a 14-of-20 finish.
  • Sophomore Briana Cox (Miami, Fla.) represented the field events, starting the season with a 10.87-meter throw in the shot put to finish 14-of-27 at Margaret Simmons.
  • Cox delivered two strong performances at Hilltopper Relays as she finished 11-of-32 in the hammer throw with a distance of 45.66 meters and a 12-of-27 outing in the shot put with a mark 11.30 meters. She then improved at the SWAC Championships, finishing 10-of-24 in the shot put with a mark of 11.86 meters.
