Alabama A&M 2021-22 Season in Review: Women’s Tennis

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – With the close of the 2021-22 campaign, the Alabama A&M Sports Information Office is producing a Season in Review for each of the program's 16 sports from the past year.
 
That series began with the fall season before progressing to the winter and spring campaigns. Each week reviews will be released on Mondays and Wednesdays until concluding with the final spring sport on Monday, July 18 and a Department Season in Review on Wednesday, July 20. Today we take a look back at the 2021-22 Women's Tennis season.

2021-22 Season in Review
  • Opened the season at 5-1 in SWAC play, defeating Southern (2/18), Grambling (2/19), Bethune-Cookman (2/20), Mississippi Valley State (3/10) and Alcorn State (3/13).
  • Defeated Tennessee State (4/10) 7-0 in non-conference play and also faced in-state foes Auburn, UAB, North Alabama, Jacksonville State and Troy.
  • Qualified for SWAC Tournament as No. 6 seed, dropping narrow 4-3 decision to solid Florida A&M (4/22) squad.
 
Individual Achievements/Honors
  • Senior Jasmine Boyd (Marion, Ind.) anchored No. 1 singles and doubles, going 8-8 and 4-9, respectively.
  • Boyd delivered in the classroom, earning a prestigious Department of Defense (DoD) SMART Scholarship as a result of her STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) work. She is one of approximately 300 individuals to be so honored and will work with the Naval Oceanographic Office – Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, Mississippi.
  • Juniors Neha Ghare (Pune, India) and Camila Ruiz Diaz (Asuncion, Paraguay) each earned All-SWAC Second-Team honors. Ghare earned hers at the No. 5 spot going 7-2 at that position and 8-8 overall and 4-9 in doubles while Ruiz Diaz was 6-2 at No. 4 and 8-7 overall. She was a perfect 5-0 in singles in SWAC play while Ghare was 5-1.
  • Freshman Deja Brown (Spring Valley, Calif.) and junior India Woods (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) dominated doubles play in the SWAC, going 6-1 in league play.
