ITTA BENA, Miss. | Anthony Mateo pitched eight innings, fanning a season-high eight batters, but it wasn't enough as the Alabama A&M University baseball team dropped the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series opener to Mississippi Valley State, 2-1 in 10 innings, at Magnolia Field.
After a scoreless first two innings, Alabama A&M (7-21 overall, 2-6 SWAC) broke through with a run in the third when
AJ Anderson scored on a
Chris Walker single to center, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Mississippi Valley State (5-17, 1-6) answered in the bottom of the frame with one run, tying the game at 1.
The Delta Devils put two runners on with no outs in the bottom of the 10
th inning and plated the winning run as Mississippi Valley State took the opening game of the series.
Mateo started for the Bulldogs and had his longest outing of the season. Mateo went eight innings, fanning eight, with no walks and gave up one run on three hits. Anthony Torres and
William Tarpley worked in relief.
Luke Richard surrendered one run on six hits, with eight strikeouts and one walk in nine innings. Camden Farmer pitched in relief.
