MONTGOMARY, AL | The Alabama A&M women's tennis team delivered a strong performance on Friday morning, defeating Florida A&M, 4-1, in Southwestern Athletic Conference action.
Alabama A&M 7-9 overall controlled the match early and never looked back, using a dominant showing in singles play to secure the victory over Florida A&M.Â
The Bulldogs battled in doubles competition, but Florida A&M claimed the early advantage with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to earn the opening point. The No. 3 doubles match went unfinished in a tightly contested battle.
Alabama A&M quickly responded in singles play, taking control across the lineup. Alicia Owegi set the tone with a commanding straight-set victory at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-2), while Sofia Sotelo Raya followed with a dominant (6-1, 6-3) win at No. 3.Â
The Bulldogs continued to build momentum as Melissa Mwakha secured another point with a convincing (6-3, 6-2) victory at No. 4 singles. Nardine Salem added to the tally with a strong (6-2, 6-4) win at No. 5, putting Alabama A&M firmly in control of the match.Â
With the match already decided, Alabama A&M's depth and consistency in singles play proved to be the difference, as the Bulldogs claimed four singles wins to seal the conference victory.
