MARTIN, Tenn. | Zak Rice collected three hits and drove in a pair as the Alabama A&M University baseball team fell to UT Martin, 22-4 in seven innings, on Tuesday afternoon at the Skyhawk Baseball Field.
Alabama A&M (7-24) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
With one down in the frame,
Brycen Hammonds and
Chris Walker reached on back-to-back singles.
Zak Rice followed with a base hit to center as Hammonds and Walker scored. Rice came across when
Tervell Johnson fouled out to the second baseman.
UT Martin (15-13) answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs on four hits to grab a 4-3 advantage.
The Bulldogs tied the game at four with a run in the third, but the Skyhawks responded with seven runs in the bottom half to push the lead to 11-4.
UT Martin added four runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and six more in the sixth to extend the advantage to 22-4.
Alabama A&M finished with seven hits and committed four errors.
Rice had the big day, going 3-for-3, with two RBI, two runs scored and belted a solo homer in the third inning.
Virgil Health (0-3) took the loss as he surrendered nine runs (four earned) on six hits, with three strikeouts and one walk in 2.1 innings. Daveyon Lavender,
Nick Espinola and
Raymond Clark pitched out of the bullpen.
Brandon King (2-3) picked up the win by pitching five innings. He gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits, with a pair of strikeouts. Drake Bayles and Mason Little worked in relief.
