THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University baseball team nearly rallied from five runs down in the final inning, but the Bulldogs could not overcome the big deficit in falling to Texas Southern, 7-5, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Thursday afternoon from the Bulldog Baseball Field.

Texas Southern (13-12 overall, 8-2 SWAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first and added three more in the third for a 5-0 advantage.

The Tigers stretched the lead to 6-0 with a run in the top of the fifth, but Alabama A&M (7-25, 2-8) pulled within four with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.

With one out in the inning,
Devante Wells was hit by a pitched and advanced to third when
AJ Anderson singled through the right side. After Anderson stole second,
Miles Jackson walked to load the bases.
Brycen Hammonds drew a walk as Wells scored and
Chris Walker brought Anderson across on a sacrifice fly to center to close the gap to 6-2.

Texas Southern got a run back in the top of the sixth to extend the advantage to 7-2.

Alabama A&M tried to rally in the ninth as the Bulldogs with three runs.

Anderson opened the inning with a base hit up the middle and moved to third on a double to left by Jackson. Hammonds brought both runners across with a single to left. With one down,
Tarris Murray grounded out to the second baseman as Hammonds scored to close the gap to 7-5.

William Tarpley (0-1) took the loss, giving up seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits, with six strikeouts and two walks in six innings.
Bryce Dolce and
Edyn Barber worked the final three innings in relief.

Joshua Pena (4-1) picked up the win, surrendering two runs on three hits, with five strikeouts and three walks in six innings.
