ASHEVILLE, N.C. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team fought hard in the series finale on Sunday but could not overcome an eight-run fourth inning in a 12-7 loss to UNC Asheville at the Greenwood Baseball Field.
UNC Asheville (10-7) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, using an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead before a decisive eight-run third inning created separation.
Alabama A&M (5-12) answered in the top of the third inning, erupting for four runs to briefly grab the momentum. The rally began when
Devante Wells reached, and the Bulldogs loaded the bases before
Miles Jackson delivered an RBI double.
Charles Morris followed with a run-scoring double and
Tervell Johnson added an RBI hit as Alabama A&M pushed across four runs to take a 4-1 lead.
UNC Asheville quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring eight runs on six hits and four walks to reclaim the lead at 9-4.
The Maroon & White chipped away at the deficit in the fifth inning when Johnson blasted a solo home run to cut the margin to 9-5.
Alabama A&M continued to battle in the sixth inning, scoring twice.
Brycen Hammonds, who finished with three hits, doubled home a run before another run crossed later in the frame to make it 9-7.
UNC Asheville added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to extend the lead to 12-7, and the Bulldogs were unable to mount another comeback in the final two innings.
Hammonds led Alabama A&M at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Morris and Johnson each scored two runs. Johnson added an RBI homer and a walk, while Jackson finished with a hit and an RBI.
On the mound,
Brady Baxter took the loss after allowing five runs over 2.1 innings of work. Alabama A&M used six pitchers in the contest, with
Avery Seaton providing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.
