Shorthanded Bulldogs Still Defeat Tigers

Down a player, A&M rallies for win

Yemurai Muskwe was relegated to a spectator as she gets past a slight injury. Her Lady Bulldog teammates stepped up in her absence, getting a 5-2 win over Tennessee State.

Without Muskwe as a part of the #2 doubles team, freshman Jasmine Cherry moved onto the team with Te’Isha Mixon and helped the Lady Bulldogs secure the doubles point. Cherry and Mixon were first off the court with an 8-1 win, followed shortly by the #1 team of Me’Shala Johnson and Brittany Jelks, 8-2 winners and clinchers of the point.

With a forfeit at #6 singles and a loss at #5, the Ladies of A&M would need to win 3 of the remaining 4 singles matches for the win. They would leave none.

Mixon and Johnson, playing on adjacent courts, seemed to be going game for game during their matches. Mixon, playing #1, won 6-2, 6-0, and Johnson won 6-0, 6-3 at #2. Jelks clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #3 singles. Cherry, in an abbreviated match because of the clinch, closed out the scoring with a solid 8-1 win.

“We had quite a few people to come out and it was good to play well and get a win at home,” commented Coach Thomas Colvin. “We are playing well and if we can correct a few small things and get Yemurai back, we should be rounding into form at the right time.”

The Lady Bulldogs host Western Kentucky on Tuesday, March 10, at 11 a.m., at Huntsville Tennis Center.
