Tornado watches and high wind advisories on Friday made play tricky, even comical at times, but Alabama A&M held on to get a 6-1 win over Alabama State in the regular season finale for the women's tennis team. With the win, the Bulldogs move to 9-8 on the season heading into the SWAC Tournament this weekend.
Freshman Te’Isha Mixon was held out of the match, but her teammates rolled on in spite of her absence. Jasmine Cherry stepped into the #2 doubles spot with Yemurai Muskwe and got a win while Brittany Jelks and Me’Shala Johnson did the same at #1.
In singles, each of the Lady Bulldogs got a “W” just ahead of the tornado watch becoming a warning.
“With the door to the regular season closed, we have to focus on stepping up for the championships,” said coach Thomas Colvin. “We’ve got to sharpen up some things and we only have a few days to get that done.”
The Lady Bulldogs will enter the tournament as the #3 seed in the east and will face the #2 seed in the west,
Grambling State.
“This will be the 3rd time in a row that we’ve faced them in the first round of the tournament. Hopefully, this year, we will go there with the desire and intensity to move forward. If we do that and play smart, we should do well.”
The first round match up will be at
9 a.m. on April 17 at the City Park Tennis Complex in
Alexandria, La.
