After a strong showing at the East vs. West Round Robin, the Lady Bulldogs expected to come into the weekend play and secure a spot in
Alexandria, La., for the Conference Championship. As it turned out, the Ladies had to struggle to keep their tournament hopes alive. Te'lsha Mixon finished her singles season in the conference with a perfect 8-0 record, leading the Bulldogs to a No. 3 seed in the SWAC Tournament. A&M followed that performance with a 6-1 road victory over Tennessee State on Thursday.
For SWAC competition, Te’Isha
Mixon, 8-0; Me’Shala Johnson, 6-1; Brittany Jelks, 3-5; Jasmine Cherry, 4-4; Yemurai Muskwe, 4-3; Alison Gladness, 5-3.
Jackson State 2-5
A sputtering start in doubles left the Lady Bulldogs with an uphill climb for singles. Freshman Te’Isha Mixon (6-0, 6-3) and Senior Me’Shala Johnson (6-1, 6-3) were the lone winners in singles as the Ladies of A&M got close, but weren’t able to finish the win.
Mississippi Valley 7-0
The Lady Bulldogs pulled out a sweep of Mississippi Valley’s Devillettes in a 7-0 win. Each
doubles team got an 8-0 win, and five of the six singles matches were 6-0, 6-0.
Alcorn State 2-5
In almost a repeat of the Jackson State match, the Lady Bulldogs dropped the doubles point and then only got wins at #1 and #2 singles. Mixon won by retirement while Johnson went to a 3rd set tie-break to get her win.
Alabama State 7-0
The number 3 doubles team made their mark early with an 8-2 win and clinch of the doubles point. In singles, the Lady Bulldogs blanked the Lady Hornets, winning all 6 of the singles matches. The win in singles gives Lady Bulldog freshman Te’Isha Mixon and undefeated record in SWAC play.
Tennessee State 6-1
The Bulldogs rolled giving up only a team point in the #6 singles slot by default.
