Alabama A&M's women's tennis team got two things it has’t had much of during this tennis season, warm weather and no wind…and they took advantage of the beautiful conditions to pick up two wins over the weekend. Friday, the Bulldogs beat West Alabama in Livingston, Ala., and Saturday, dropped Tennessee State at home, 7-2 and 7-0 respectively.
On the final Friday of the regular season, the Ladies of A&M put forth a solid effort in downing a very capable West Alabama team. Te’Isha Mixon and Brittany Jelks, playing together for the first time, played well in putting the first win of the day on the books with an 8-3 win at #1 doubles. Shannon Warner and Denise Cherry started off really slow in their first match together. Down 4-0, Warner and Cherry used some aggressive net play and solid groundstrokes to battle back and force a tiebreak that they won 7-3.
In singles, the Ladies were just as solid, clinching the overall match with the top 3 singles matches, allowing the bottom 3 to play a pro set.
Saturday, Tennessee State visited the campus of AAMU and found the Lady Bulldogs to be inhospitable hosts. On a beautiful spring day, the Lady Bulldogs took advantage of being at home and handed TSU a 7-0 loss.
Just as they had done the day before, Mixon and Jelks were first off the court, taking an 8-0 win. D. Cherry and Warner followed soon after with an 8-1 win. Gladness and J. Cherry took a bit longer, but got the win that eluded them the day before.
In singles, the Ladies in Maroon put together a dominant performance, limiting TSU to a mere 15 games won through the 12 sets played. Freshmen Denise Cherry and Shannon Warner gave up a single game between them, 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0. Te’Isha Mixon, starting to look more like the player of ’09, won 6-2, 6-1, and Brittany Jelks won 0 and 2. Jasmine Cherry and Alison Gladness rounded out the scoring by winning 6-3, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-3.
The Lady Bulldogs will play their final regular season match
on Monday, 4/12 at 2 pm at Huntsville Tennis Center.
