Bulldogs Sweep PV, Advance to Semifinals

Jelks earns all-conference honors

ALEXANDRIA, La. - The day after she crossed an item off of her ‘bucket list’, senior Brittany Jelks helped move her Lady Bulldogs tennis team into the semifinals of the SWAC Women’s Tennis Championships.  They will meet defending champion Jackson State on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

Earlier in the year, each member of the team was asked to develop her own ‘bucket list’.  One of the things that Jelks wanted was to make the All-SWAC team in this, her final season.  The senior from Greenville, Miss., did just that in earning second team All-SWAC honors announced at a banquet the night before play began.  She was the only Bulldog to receive an award on the evening.

On Friday, her leadership and play helped the Lady Bulldogs move past Prairie View A&M to a semifinal matchup with the Tigers of Jackson State.  The 4-0 win against PVAM is the first time the Ladies of A&M have move beyond the first round since their SWAC Championship in 2007.

The AAMU Ladies got on the board first with the win in doubles.  PVAM only fielded 5 players, so no #3 doubles team.  Denise Cherry and Shannon Warner cruised to an 8-0 win at #2, giving AAMU the doubles point.  In singles, PVAM played tough, but Jelks and sophomore Jasmine Cherry were able to get straight set wins to clinch for the Lady Bulldogs.

The semifinal match will start at 9 a.m. at City Park Tennis Complex in Alexandria, La.
