NORMAL – The Alabama A&M basketball teams will host the Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in their annual Think Pink game on Monday, Feb. 7 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
In their most recent contest the Lady Bulldogs fell in double overtime 76-75 to Mississippi Valley State University. The loss dropped A&M into a three way tie for third place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Junior guard Whiquitta Tobar recorded her ninth contest with 20 or more points posting 28 on Valley in her second highest point total in a game this season. A&M defeated UAPB 63-59 earlier in the year.
The Lady Lions are 1-9 in league play and are led by Jasmine Abrams who is averaging 12.4 points per game.
The men’s basketball squad fell to the Devils 63-60 this past Saturday evening. Junior guard Casey Cantey led the team with 13 points.
Head coach Vann Pettaway has not defeated UAPB in the last 12 tries dating back to Jan. 7, 2006. That was the last time the 24th year coach got a victory over the Lions. A win tonight would give coach Pettaway his 450th win of his career.
Pine-Bluff is led by Allen Smith and Savalace Townsend who are both averaging 12.2 point a game.
The WBCA Pink Zone® initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone®, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research. The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw 56+ schools break attendance records at their event.
