HATTIESBURG -- The Alabama A&M softball team finally got in the win column by defeating the Lady Jaguars of Southern University 8-7 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi during the SWAC softball round-up.
The Lady Bulldogs were facing a 6-3 deficit heading into their bottom half of the fourth inning before scoring five runs to go ahead for good. A&M improves to 1-13 on the year.
The game was scoreless through the first innings until Southern scored five runs in the top half of the second.
In the bottom of the fourth Fayesha Ward singled to score Raven Grubbs and Nicole Norton. Nikkea Rembert reached on a fielder’s choice, then advanced to second. The Lady Bulldogs drew even in their half of the fifth on a three-run homer from Jasmine Riley and that scored Ward and Rembert. This was Riley’s fifth homerun of the season.
The Lady Jaguars scored only one run in the top of the fifth inning but it was not enough as the Lady Bulldogs earned their first victory of the season.
A&M will return to the state of Mississippi for a four game Southwestern Athletic Conference series with Mississippi Valley State University on Friday and Saturday March 25-26. First pitch for both games is set for 1 p.m.
