Bulldogs Pick up Second SWAC Win


ITTA BENA – The Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs softball team captured its second Southwestern Athletic Conference victory with a 6-4 win over the Mississippi Valley State University Devilettes.

In the first game, of their three-game series, in the top of the sixth inning, Jasmine Riley reached first with a walk.  Corrissa Deadwyler then laced a triple down the right field line.   An error committed by Valley’s catcher in an attempt to pick-off Riley at third scored both players.  Later in the inning, a throwing error by MSVU’s Kimberly Spivey allowed another Bulldog run to score, tying the game at 3-3 entering the bottom of the sixth inning.

With no outs in the eighth inning, the Maroon and White opened the scoring when Jasmine Riley capped her sixth homerun of the season over the left-field fence, giving the Bulldogs a 4-3 advantage.

The Devilettes outfielder, with a runner on third, Ashley Hobbs bunted down the third base line and beat the throw to first to score Valley’s Nicole Burr from third.  That run tied the game at four.

In the top of the ninth, A&M’s Riley connected on a two-out bases-loaded single to score two runs.

Spivey (6-10) finished the game going nine innings striking out ten.  The Lady Bulldog’s starting pitcher Cassandra Brown (2-8) went nine innings walking five in the win.

Alabama A&M’s (2-13, 2-4), Raven Grubbs, Jasmine Riley and LeQueesha Poe each had two hits in the game. Rachelle Harris and Diana Parada tallied two hits each for Mississippi Valley.

Next up the Lady Bulldogs will host SWAC champion Alcorn State University to a three-game home SWAC series starting on Friday, April 1 with a single game beginning at 3 p.m. The doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, April 2 is set for a 1 p.m.
