NORMAL - The Jackson State University Tigers swept the Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs 7-3 and 10-6 in a SWAC Eastern Division matchup on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon.
The second game was an all out hit derby for both teams as a total of 27 hits were calculated.
By the completion of five innings, the Tigers put the game out of reach totaling six runs, two in the first, one in the second and three in the fifth. By game's end the visitors had 10 runs on 16 hits and one Lady Bulldog error.
The Tigers held an early 6-0 lead before A&M got on the board with two runs in the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, the Lady Bulldogs held JSU to a three and out.
In the bottom of seventh the Maroon and White cut the lead within three as Corissa Deadwyler scored on an RBI double from Paris Sanders. Jasmine Sanders smacked in a three-run homer, her eighth of the season, with two runners on to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
However, in the top of the eighth the Tigers added four runs on a two RBI doubles and a run batted in triple to seal their victory.
In game one JSU pounded out 14 hits and seven runs, while A&M totaled five hits and three runs.
In the bottom of the second inning Nicole Norton popped a two run homer to score Vanessa Kersten to cut the Tiger lead within three. A&M’s only other score came in the bottom of the third when Jasmine Riley sacrifice fly went to left field allowing Fayesha Ward to score the third run.
The Tigers scored in the fourth and seventh innings to close out game one.
The Lady Bulldogs held senior day as Birmingham, Alabama native Paris Sanders played her final home game in a Maroon and White uniform.
These two teams will meet again on Sunday, April 17 at 11 a.m. to conclude the series.
