MONTGOMERY – The 2011 softball season on “The Hill” ended, as A&M fell
two games to one in their last Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern division three-game series versus in-state rival Alabama State University (10-30, 6-10).
The opening contest of the series went the Lady Hornets way. A&M took their only lead 1-0 in the top of the second inning. State would go on to score a run in the bottom of the second, third and fourth inning to push the score in their favor 6-1. The Lady Bulldogs would score two in the top of the seventh but couldn’t produce any more falling 6-3.
In game two of the series, both teams combined for 33 hits and 29 runs but A&M was able to take advantage of the hit derby claiming their fourth win of the year with a 19-10 final. The 19 runs were the most the Lady Bulldogs would score in one game. Shortstop Nicole Norton set a Maroon & White team record for the most homeruns in a game with three. Norton finished the game going 5-5 with four runs and six runs batted in.
In game three ASU’s Brehanna Rodrigues hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning giving Alabama State a 10-9 win at Chisholm Park. The series victory landed the Lady Hornets the fourth and final spot in next month's SWAC post season tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs end the season 4-26 overall and 4-13 in the conference. The last time A&M advanced to the SWAC Tournament was in 2007. Head coach Nedra Brown concludes her fourth season with an overall record of 35-96.
