Ladies Show Improvement on “The Plains” in Loss to Auburn

Complete Results

NORMAL -- Five years ago, the Lady Bulldogs made their first trip to ‘The Plains’ to play a then #28 ranked Auburn Tigers.

That day, two young ladies won a single game each. Today, the scoring line looked quite a bit different. While the Bulldogs are yet to post a win in singles or doubles, this years’ match showed a lot of improvement.

“We are better than we were then and I think the scores are reflecting that”, said Thomas Colvin, Lady Bulldogs head coach. “We lost 0-7, but that doesn’t reflect how these ladies fought for each and every point.”

The Lady Bulldogs managed to win only one game in doubles, but showed plenty of heart once the singles play started.

Morgan Shaw fell 6-1, 6-0 at #1 singles, but got praise, as did all the young ladies, from Colvin.

“Morgan’s match was game after game of deuce and ad, deuce and ad,” Colvin mentioned. “This is the second match that she’s played well but we have already talked about some specifics that need to be improved on.”

Shannon Warner played a solid match at #2 singles. Though she lost 6-1, 6-4, she was impressive in her approach, particularly in the second set where she was able to outlast Auburn’s Kurteva in some very long rallies.

Denise and Jasmine Cherry were at #3 and 4 respectively, falling 6-0, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-0. Each settled in and played a solid match, but was unable to keep the attacking Tigers at bay.

Jessica Taylor showed a lot of improvement in the freshman’s second collegiate match.

“She seems to have gotten past the nerves that plagued her against UAH a week ago and played much better in her 6-1, 6-1 loss,” Colvin stated.

Christa Rogers fell 6-1, 6-1, but like Taylor, showed a lot of improvement this past week.

“As a team, we showed improvement. As a coach, that’s what you hope to see week in and week out,” Colvin added. “We’ll keep moving forward and look to build on those improvements this week.”

The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Nashville, TN on February 4, to face the Lady Bisons of Lipscomb.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
