Vernon Marshall named Coca Cola Scholar Athlete

BIRMINGHAM – Alabama A&M’s leading tackler Vernon Marshall was named the Bulldogs scholar-athlete for the 71^st Magic City Classic.

Marshall leads the Bulldogs with 58 tackles (28 solo, 30 assisted) and is ranked fifth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The elementary education major holds a 3.70 cumulative grade point average and received the award for the second straight year. His GPA was five points higher than Alabama State’s honoree.

Marshall is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and has participated in a number of community service projects including Habitat for Humanity, reading to the children at Martin Luther King Jr. elementary school and assisted with donations for clothes to the homeless.

The Birmingham native has collected 259 tackles, 30.5 tackles-for-loss, and eight sacks in his four year career wearing the Maroon & White. He blocked the game winning kick vs. Tuskegee University in the first game of 2012.
