Bisons Squeak By Lady Bulldogs

NASHVILLE -- The Alabama A&M women’s tennis team has not beaten the Lady Bisons of Lipscomb University since the spring of 2007. Saturday night, the Ladies of A&M came very close to notching that win in a hard fought 1-6 loss to Lipscomb University.

Lipscomb was able to secure the doubles point at the #2 doubles spot. AAMU won #1 doubles 8-4 while the Lady Bisons won the #3 doubles match 8-0. At #2, the team of Denise Cherry and Jessica Taylor held a lead but could not secure the win.

“Singles matches between the two schools have always been long,” head coach Thomas Colvin said. “Neither team giving an inch. Saturday night was no different as four of the six singles matches went three sets.

Morgen Shaw got the Maroon & White the only point of the night in a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win over LU’s Alyssa Bellini. Shaw started the third slow and had to battle back from a 2-5 deficit to claim her win.

In what can only be called a slug-fest, the Lady Bulldogs Denise Cherry fell to LU’s Deahua Welcher, 7-6(1), 4-6, 3-6.

Similarly, Shannon Warner fell in her three set match to Jenny Borck, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6.

Jasmine Cherry and Christa Rogers were the only two Lady Bulldogs to fall in straight sets with their scores being 1-6, 4-6 and 0-6, 0-6 respectively.

Freshman Jessica Taylor showed marked improvement in her match. The Augusta, GA native lost the first set 3-6, but battled back to win the 2nd at 7-5 before falling 10-8 in the third.

Alabama A&M will have one week to prepare before heading to Montgomery, AL on February 11, to face Kennesaw State and Alabama State.
