A&M Heads to SWAC Tournament for First Time Since 2007

SWAC Softball Tournament Bracket

The Alabama A&M softball team is headed to the 2012 Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament, in anticipation of bringing home a title. The double elimination tournament will be held at Shea Brothers Softball Complex in Irondale, Ala. from Thursday-Sunday, May 10-13.
 
AAMU will take on Prairie View A&M on Thursday at 6 p.m. This will be a test for the Maroon and White as earlier in the season A&M fell to PVAM 4-3 in the SWAC Softball Roundup.
 
“This is exciting, that we have clinched a number three seed in the tournament,” stated head coach Nedra Brown, “This gives my team high hopes and confidence that we can come out and win the SWAC.”
 
With the addition of a pitching coach the softball team continues to move in a new direction.
 
The Maroon & White earned the third seed in the tournament finishing the league season 7-10 winning the tie breaker with a 2-1 series win over Alabama State.
 
A&M comes in hitting .234 as a team, but possess two batters above .300. With a batting average of .352, 32 hits, ten doubles, and 15 walks Junior Jasmine Riley tops. Raven Grubbs, a junior is batting .328, while freshman Brianna Zeigler leads the speed game with 16 stolen bases and 18 runs scored, while hitting .284.

Totaling 140.2 innings, two shutouts and 107 strikeouts, the freshman Anisa Britt has a 4.56 ERA as the Lady Bulldogs starting pitcher. Britt ranks third in the conference in strikeouts. Cassandra Brown, a sophomore is second on the team with 81.1 innings worked, and has an 8.30 ERA.
