Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Southern in Houston

Houston-The Lady Bulldogs' soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-0 loss that ended its 2013 season against Southern on Thursday morning in Houston, Texas. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 1-15-3 overall (0-2-2 SWAC) with the loss, while the Jaguars improved to 7-8-2 (3-0-1 SWAC).

It was the same score line as the earlier meeting in Normal, but it was a completely different effort from the Maroon & White.

The young A&M team was fired up, ready for this game, and anxious for redemption. The Lady Bulldogs asserted themselves, and dominated possession early. Defensively the team played a solid game, not letting the Jaguars get anywhere near the net of Marissa Oehler for a period of 25-minutes.

Jami Blackston of the Lady Jaguars ended the game's goal drought in the 26th minute after receiving a pass from teammate Aleia Longoria. The Maroon & White did not lose their fight after going down a goal. They regrouped and did not allow another goal for the remainder of the first period.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Lady Bulldogs again began to assert themselves. Despite reasserting themselves and increasing their offensive play, A&M saw a second ball find the back of the net. Blackston & Longoria teamed up for a second time to give SU their second goal of the game.

A&M nearly responded with a goal of their own immediately following Blackston's second of the contest. Ester Martinez in a homecoming match slammed a blazing shot toward the goal of SU's Kerinn Hall, only to be denied by the crossbar. Martinez nearly scored what would be the first playoff goal of her colligate career in front of 20+ friends and family.

Although determined, the high-energy Maroon & White team fell 3-0 to Southern University. Jami Blackston's hat trick and the Lady Jaguars proved too much for the young A&M team.

"I am proud of my team for their performance today, even after falling behind they did not give up their fight. The freshman showed me a lot in these 90-minutes, they showed great potential and I know we will have a great team next year with every one coming back," says Head Coach Frank Davies.

The Lady Bulldogs tallied four shots, two shots on goal and one corner kick in today's action. Oehler added five saves on 12 shots faced. The Maroon & White finished the 2013 campaign 1-15-3; and will return all but three players in 2014.
