Softball Drops Season Opener 9-1, 12-0

Box Score NORMAL, Ala. - The Jacksonville State Lady Gamecocks downed the Lady Bulldogs 9-1 in the opener and 12-0 in the nightcap, in a pair of five innings games today.
With the two wins, JSU improved to 5-6 on the season, while AAMU dropped to 0-2 to begin the year.

In the opening contest, the Lady Bulldogs plated their only run of the afternoon in their first plate appearance after

Anisa Britt singled off of Jacksonville State’s starter Hilary Phillips to scored Brianna Zeigler, who led off the game with a hit by pitch.

Cassandra Brown, who started for the Lady Bulldogs, pitched 3.1 innings. The Miami native faced 20 batters before giving up six runs on seven hits. Brown also walked three on the day. Britt came in to relieve Brown but it wasn’t enough as three more runs scored.

In the night cap the Maroon and White had three hits coming from Brianna Zigler, Jasmine Riley, and Megan Gray. Gray started on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs as she pitched three innings. The Hartselle, Ala. native allowed nine runs on 11 hits as she faced 21 batters. JSU took advantage of four AAMU errors and five walks given up by the Lady Bulldogs' pitcher

JSU, who finished with 12 total hits, connected on seven in the first frame. The Red and White would tack on three runs in the third and fourth before closing down the game in the fifth.

The Lady Bulldogs return to the diamond for a home opener on Friday, Feb 22nd as they face cross town rival the University of Alabama –Huntsville, at 2 p.m. at the A&M softball field.
