NORMAL, Ala. - The Alabama State softball team defeated in-state rival and conference foe Alabama A&M 1-0 during game one of its three-game series at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex on Friday evening.
Melony Hill led A&M with two hits on the evening. Laqueesha Poe, Anisa Britt and Jasmine Riley each had one hit on the night.
In the top of the second inning, Hill tripled down right field line, but was stranded as the Lady Bulldogs could not convert in the inning, as Jasmine James grounded out to end the inning.
Fayesha Ward reached first on a fielding error by the Lady Hornets second baseman. Riley, then grounded out to end the inning in the top of the third.
Both teams were scoreless until the fourth inning when State’s Aleesa Yanez hits a single to center field, scoring Makayla Webster for the lone run of the game.
In the top of the fifth the Lady Bulldogs threatened with two runners in scoring position, as Hill double to right field and Jasmine James walked. Clinging on with two outs, Riley flied out to center-field leaving the runners stranded.
Meaghan Gray pitched a complete game for the Lady Bulldogs, giving up six hits and two walks while striking out two.
Both teams remained scoreless the duration of the contest as ASU held on for the 1-0 win.
In game two, A&M jumped on the scoreboard when Jasmine Riley’s single scored Brianna Zeigler to go up 1-0, in the top of the first inning. The Lady Bulldogs added two more runs in the bottom of the second. Zeigler tripled to right field to score LaQueesha Poe and Melony Hill who both got on with a walk.
The Maroon and White went on to scored two runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
AAMU went up 6-3 in the top of the sixth inning. However, the ASU bats woke up. Megan Dixon led off the State rally with a solo home run to center field. The Lady Hornets totaled five hits to take the lead and final score at 8-6.
Zeigler went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in to lead the Lady Bulldogs at the plate.
In the final game of the divisional series, Anisa Britt lead the Lady Bulldogs, with three hits, one of them was a double, and two RBI’s. Britt also pitched five innings, facing 31 batters. She struck out one and walked four.
Meaghan Gray had three runs batted in, but that wasn’t enough as ASU, held the Lady Bulldogs to a final score 6-5.
A&M will make their final SWAC road trip to take on the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley, for a three game weekend series on Friday and Saturday, April 12-13.
