Alabama A&M to employ running back-by-committee in 2013

Original Story

Among the more than 20 seniors Alabama A&M lost from it's 2012, football team was starting running back Kaderius Lacey.

Lacey, the school's all-time leading rusher with more 2,800 yards during his career, led Southwestern Athletic Conference with 932 yards as a senior.

In 2012, the Bulldogs won't rely on any one back to carry the load, instead they'll look to multiple backs to get them production out of the offensive backfield, coach Anthony Johnson said, following his team's second scrimmage of the fall Saturday.

"We're not going to be a one-back team. I don't see us being a one-back team. I see us being a back by committee (team)," Jones said. "So, two or three guys are going to have to play. They're going to have to play well and at the end of the day, those three guys are going to have to be productive and I believe that's the kind of team we'll be."

Junior Brendan Johnson, Lacey's backup is recovering from postseason surgery, after rushing for 257 yards last season. But others namely, Brandon Eldemire and Ball State transfer Barrington Scott, have emerged as viable options.

Eldemire, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound redshirt freshman from Miami, Fla., showed flashes of his capabilities in the spring, rushing for 63 yards and two scores on 11 carries in the firs half of the Maroon & White game back in late March.
Scott, a 5-11, 214-pounder from Ft. Wayne, Ind., rushed for 374 yards and a touchdown on 99 carries last season.

"I think Brandon Eldemire and Barrington Scott are really stepping up," A&M running backs coach Andy Fuller said. "Brandon has has had two good scrimmages. He scored a long touchdown (Saturday) on a pass about 70 yards. They're both stepping up while B.J is recovering from surgery."

A&M will have a two-a-day session Monday.

The Bulldogs (7-4) travel to Grambling State (La.) for their season and conference opener Aug. 31st.
