Lady Bulldogs fall to Mercer

Box Score

Boxscore

Normal- The Lady Bulldogs soccer team dropped a tough one to the Lady Bears of Mercer coming out on the losing end of a 10-0 contest.

Mercer traveled to Huntsville, Ala. to play their first game of the season. The Bears, coming off a 13-5-3 2012 campaign, played tough against the young 0-1 Maroon & White team.

The Lady Bulldogs, playing in their second game in just two days, showed some fatigue throughout the cost. Both mental and physical fatigue was evident, as they had a short time to recover from yesterdays 5-nill loss to the Lady bulldogs of South Carolina State.

The first half saw the AAMU fall behind early, as Mercer scored after just two minutes of play during a dead ball situation. The team received their wake up call and began to play with increased intensity. Despite increasing their play, the Maroon & White had no response for the offense of the Bears.

By the end of the first 45, A&M found themselves trailing six-nothing. Five Mercer goals came during the run of play, while the sixth goal came from a penalty spot. The defense had a lot of work to do in the half as they faced 17 first half shots and five corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Oehler tallied six first half saves on the 17 shots she faced.

The second half, played out similarly to the first half with the exception of the A&M offensive action. The Maroon & White defended another five corner kicks and 18 shots, with Oehler rounding out her save total at 14.

The Lady Bulldogs had a true offensive spark in the second half. They created numerous chances and a few positive goal-scoring opportunities. Initially the team showed offensive promise even without producing a decent final ball. After consecutive attacks true promise shined through. Freshmen Estelle Esperance and Ester Martinez had the best chances. Esperance tallied three shots with two forcing saves while Martinez recorded one shot. Martinez also scored a goal, but it was disallowed and ruled offsides.

There was definite improvement shown from the young Lady Bulldog team in today's match. The team will return to action this Monday, August 26th versus Lipscomb University. The game will kick off at 4:00 p.m. and can be followed via live stats.
