Savannah State Tigers edge Lady Bulldogs

Box Score

Irondale, Ala. - In their final contest of the Tiny Laster HBCU Classic, the Lady Bulldogs fell to the Tigers of Savannah State University 4-2.

Pitcher Cassandra Brown made quick work of the SSU squad, recording a one hit-10 pitch inning to open action. Offensively, the Maroon & White loaded the bases after drawing two walks and a hit by pitch from State's pitcher Amanda McDowell. Despite having runners in scoring position, A&M was unable to cross the plate and take an early lead.

In the second inning, the Tigers recorded two runs before receiving three outs to take a 2-0 lead.  The Lady Bulldogs could not find an immediate response and ended the inning trailing the Tigers after recording a single hit.

The next two innings saw the scoreboard remain unchanged, with Savannah State holding a slight advantage. At the top of the fifth inning, A&M tallied two errors that allowed SSU to reach base, and score a run. They would add a fourth run on a single, before ending the inning.

A&M would have another chance to cross the plate, but with the bases loaded would fall short again, taking a 4-0 deficit into the sixth inning.

Meaghan Gray came into the game to pinch hit for Chelsey Ferguson with one out on the board. Gray did her job and got the bats warm and hits flowing for the Maroon & White. Gray's one-out double was the first of the contest for A&M, and it started a rally that would score two runs. Ferguson reentered the game running for Gray then Eriel Lawson drew the seventh walk of the game to get on base. The eighth walk from SSU' McDowell would plate Ferguson, and give A&M their first run of the match. The second and final run of the game came on a Viridiana Ramos RBI single.  Ramos nearly brought the game to within one run with the base hit, but teammate Haylee Moran-Rowen was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Brown in the circle, and the defense behind her, again did their job not allowing any runs to score. The Lady Bulldogs would have last licks to try to tie or win the game; however, they were unsuccessful with the Tigers capturing the 4-2 victory

A&M drew eight walks, and tallied two runs on three hits in seven innings of action. In the circle, Brown forced two pop up outs, seven fly outs, and recorded two strikeouts for 13 of the 21 outs.

A&M softball will be back in action Wednesday, March 5, when the host Austin Peay University in a double header at Lady Bulldog Field.
