Lady Bulldogs Defeat UAPB in First Round of SWAC Tourney

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A four-run sixth inning for the Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs was enough to hold off and upset Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 5-3, in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference softball tournament Wednesday afternoon at Barbara Williams Softball Complex in Montgomery.

The win advances AAMU into the next round of the double elimination tournament as they face Southern University on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT while improving their record to 17-29. UAPB falls into an elimination game facing Alcorn State.

The Lady Bulldogs took the lead in the first inning after Kia Lang singled and Tiana Sanders doubled to right field to score Lang to take a 1-0 advantage over the Lady Lions.

Pitcher Caitlyn Hayden was able to shut UAPB out in the first three innings, but the Lady Lions were able to plate three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a fielder's choice and two singles to allow them to take a 3-1 lead over the Lady Bulldogs.

After being shut out in the fourth and fifth inning, AAMU responded in the sixth when Viridiana Ramos double coupled with a Lady Lions error scored Ariel Smith. After an Madi Pozzi single and UAPB fielding error scored Pozzi and Ramos, the Lady Bulldogs were able to reclaim the lead with a 5-3 advantage.

Hayden picked up her 12^th win of the season after holding UAPB scoreless in the seventh inning to secure the victory for AAMU. She gave up five hits, three earned runs and struck out six in seven innings of work.
