Offense and defense hot in Fan Day football scrimmage

HUNTSVILLE -- To say it was hot on the Louis Crews Stadium turf is putting it mildly.

On the other hand, Head Coach James Spady said the conditions were "nice" for Saturday's scrimmage - the Bulldogs' second scrimmage of fall camp.

The scrimmage was also the culmination of the annual Department of Athletics Fan Day.

"It was a nice competitive scrimmage," Spady said. "The nice conditions were because it was hot.

"Like it will be Sept. 2 (the Bulldogs season opener at UAB)."

The scrimmage was the first full-contact competition for freshman quarterback Aqeel Glass since being named the starter on Friday.

He ran four series, including the first drive which resulted in a Jordan Bentley touchdown run. Glass completed 10 of 16 passes with a pair of interceptions - one on a broken route by the receiver and the other on a ball that defensive back Devonte King wrestled from Isaiah Bailey in the endzone.

"Aqeel managed the offense well," Spady said. "For a freshman quarterback, that was what we (expected)."

Quarterback Damion May had a strong game, as well. He completed six of 12 passes including a 50-yard pass to Marceles Clash and a 65-yard catch-and-run touchdown pass to Zabrian Moore.

The defense caught Spady's eye also with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries, including one returned for a touchdown by Armari Holloway.

"The defense was flying and has been since the spring," Spady said. "I hope that continues."

The Bulldogs have one more week of camp and a scrimmage next Saturday before they switch to "game week mode" leading up to the Sept. 2 at UAB.

And it won't come too soon.

"You get to the point in training camp ... (players) get testy and tempers are beginning to flare," Spady said. "They're ready to hit somebody else."
