Hovermill shines on mound, Alabama A&M baseball tops Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. — Michael Hovermill did it again.

Making his second straight pitching start against a conference opponent, the Alabama A&M right-hander was strong on the hill.

Hovermill struck held Jackson State to six hits while pitching deep into the game, leading Alabama A&M past the Tigers 5-4 Friday night to open a Southwestern Athletic Conference three-game series.

Jackson State (5-10, 0-1 in SWAC) hosts Alabama A&M (3-11, 3-1) on Saturday in Game 2 of the conference series.

Hovermill (2-3) was able to pitch with the lead for the entire game. Alabama A&M scored one run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead before Jackson State rallied for two in the bottom of the third.

Justin Lott led Alabama A&M at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with an RBI. Stephan Soto added two hits and an RBI for the Bulldogs, while Pierre Brewton added a hit and an RBI.

Alabama A&M had a 5-3 lead when Hoverville left the game following the eighth inning.

Hovermill held Jackson State to six hits and three earned runs while striking out three.

Fernando Diaz Jr. recorded the save, holding Jackson State to a hit and a run in one inning of relief.
