THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT – DEE ANDERSON AND GARY QUARLES ARE SWAC'S TOP TD DUO
Different positions, different ways of getting it done and far different body types don't seem to make all that much difference when it comes to finding the endzone.
For 6-6 senior wideout
Dee Anderson (Dallas, Texas), he has found his way to paydirt a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) high eight times with a pair of three touchdown games. While Anderson gets it done as a big target streaking downfield, the 5-6 Quarles is right behind him with seven scores – all coming on the ground, usually by disappearing into the line and popping out the other side to blow past the defense.
Together their total of 15 touchdowns is the most of any duo in the SWAC as is their combined 92 points (48 for Anderson and 44 for Quarles).
BULLDOGS SHOWING OUT AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL
Already leading the SWAC in points per game at 33.3, A&M is hitting at the
national level with a No. 5 ranking in the country in passing offense (333.6).
It's far from the only impressive rankings as the Bulldogs are currently 21
st in total offense (431.0), 22
nd in passing efficiency (144.89) and yards per completion (13.27) as well as 23
rd in scoring offense (33.3) and 25
th in red zone offense (.867).
Individually, graduate quarterback
Aqeel Glass (St. Louis, Mo.) ranks in the Top-10 in five categories, including No. 5 in passing yards per game (332.0), No. 6 in passing touchdowns (21), No. 8 in total points responsible for per game (19.1) and No. 9 in passing yards and total offense (316.9). Meanwhile, Anderson ranks sixth in the nation in total touchdowns with his eight just two off the national lead.
Junior wideout Odieu Hilair (Belle Glade, Fla.) ranks seventh in receptions per game at 6.9 while junior wide receiver
Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim (Miramar, Fla.) is 13
th in that category (6.4) as well as receiving yards at 91.3. Quarles makes sure the ground game is well represented as he is just one of 11 tailbacks averaging at least 100 yards per game as he checks in right at 100.0.
ALABAMA A&M SWATS HORNETS 42-28 TO EARN FOURTH STRAIGHT MAGIC CITY CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP
Coming in to the biggest game of the year following three straight losses, Alabama A&M got back on beam as they made it four in a row at the Magic City Classic, dropping arch rival Alabama State 42-28 on Saturday, October 30.
It would be a day that would showcase the offense as Glass got things rolling with a 37-yard bomb to Anderson in the first and would later add a 55-yard catch-and-run score by Ibrahim to highlight a day that saw him throw for 321 yards and four TDs – each to a different receiver. The other two would be another 37-yard strike, this time to Hilaire, and one to redshirt-senior tight end
Kendric Johnson (New Market, Ala.) from 28-yards out.
Quarles would be the workhorse out of the backfield as he pounded away at the defense for 126 yards on just 20 carries, punching two of those into the endzone. He would also add four catches for 29-yards.
Defensively, senior cornerback
Ja'Marian Green (Belle Glade, Fla.) showed up in the stats exactly one time but it was at the right time as he picked off a pass in the endzone to squelch an ASU drive. He was joined by
Armoni Holloway on the defensive side with eight tackles to found out the top performers.
WATCH ME NOW (SEASON LONG EDITION)
With the majority of this spring's top performers back in the fold for Fall 2021, all eyes are on A&M. Glass headlines those in the spotlight as he has been named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List representing the top player at the Football Championship Subdivision, the Deacon Jones Watch List as the top player at an HBCU and both the Reese's Senior Bowl and College Football Performance Awards (CFPA).
He is joined by Ibrahim on the Deacon Jones and has also been named a BOXTOROW Preseason All-American and SWAC Preseason Player of the Year. Those pale in comparison, however, to being the first player selected to play in the inaugural HBCU Legacy Bowl, a new postseason All-Star game featuring the top 100 HBCU National Football League (NFL) draft eligible players.
On top of those honors, Glass was named Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Magic City Classic while graduate linebacker
Armoni Holloway (Pinson, Ala.) claimed Defensive MVP with impressive performances.
