BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama A&M women's indoor track & field came out strong on Day 1 of the 2021 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Championships as they brought home a total of five All-Conference honors on Wednesday, February 24.
Even with a smaller slate of events on the opening day of the championships, the Bulldogs made their presence known, particularly senior
Sabria Wooten (Dallas, Ga.) who earned a pair of All-SWAC honors. She claimed individual recognition with a 2-of-14 finish in the 3,000-meters as she posted a time of 10:53.47 before helping to anchor another top performance with in the distance medley relay.
Along with Wooten, the team of senior
Diamond Griffin (Miami, Fla.) and sophomores
Aneisha Ingram (Frankfield, Jamaica) and
Fabiona Jackson-Jenkins (Montgomery, Ala.) earned All-SWAC honors as they placed 3-of-5, crossing the line in 13:16.30. Of that group, Ingram also placed 6-of-14 in the 3,000-meters with a time of 11:37.55.
Freshman
Briana Cox (Miami, Fla.) added to the impressive performances, finishing 9-of-18 in the shotput with a distance of 11.22-meters while freshman
Trinidee Hampton (West Memphis, Ark.) was 12-of-30 in the long jump (5.31m). Junior
Jayla Neal (Atlanta, Ga.) rounded out the top performances of Day 1 as she came in 15-of-30 in that latter event, posting a distance of 5.18-meters.
"I am extremely proud of how the ladies performed on the first day of competition," said head coach
LaShaunda Jones. "I challenged them prior to the meet to forget about all the trials and limitations that we had to endure to get to this point and execute once the meet began. They did just that and you can now see that they are excited to be competing once again."
After whetting fans appetites with some top outings today, Alabama A&M's contingent will kick into high gear tomorrow with the bulk of the championships yet to come. Not only can fans can follow the day's activities through the
