BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama A&M freshman pitcher
Esperanza Coe (Beaumont, Calif.) has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week as announced by the league on Thursday, March 25.
Coe made herself known over the course of three games this past week, hitting .375 (3-for-8) with a homerun and a pair of RBIs. Pulling double duty, she also went 2-0 in the circle with a 2.00 ERA while striking out six in a pair of complete game victories over Southern.
As a pitcher she allowed five runs, three earned, along with three strikeouts in seven innings of work and was also 1-for-3 at the plate on Friday, March 19 against the Jaguars.
The next day would see her throw another seven innings in the second game of a doubleheader, this time allowing just one earned run while scattering six hits and notching another three strikeouts.
At the plate she would prove timely and needed as she belted the first homerun of her career as part of a day that saw her go 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Those performances helped the Bulldogs to a series victory over SU to open SWAC play at 2-1.
Coe and Alabama A&M softball are back in action tomorrow at Prairie View A&M for the first game of a three-game series. First pitch of that one is set for 3 p.m. with the doubleheader portion set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 27.
