NEW ORLEANS, La. – No. 4 seed Alabama A&M (5-7, 4-3 SWAC) could not overcome an early deficit as No. 1 seed Alabama State (8-6, 6-1 SWAC) notched a 4-0 victory in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Semifinals and an NCAA Division I women's tennis match on Sunday, April 18.
The Hornets would make quick work of the doubles point as the No. 2 Bulldog tandem of junior
India Woods (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and sophomore
Camila Ruiz Diaz (Asuncion, Paraguay) dropped a 6-1 decision to Madelena Andrade and Francesca Duca. The back half of earning that point came from Urska Velec and Bea Acena notching a 6-2 victory over junior
Ximena Duarte Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) and senior
Nthabiseng Mashego (Alabaster, Ala.) at the No. 3 spot.
With a 1-0 lead, ASU quickly doubled that as Acena picked up a 6-3, 6-2 decision over sophomore
Neha Ghare (Pune, India) at No. 5 with Boyd dropping a hard fought 7-5, 6-3 match at the top spot to Andrade. Duarte Ramirez would put up a fight at No. 3, taking the first set 6-0 against Demchenko but to no avail as the latter came back with 6-1, 6-3 decisions to complete the 4-0 sweep.
Alabama A&M closes out the 2021 season with a 5-7 overall record, 4-3 mark in conference play and a trip to the SWAC semifinals.
