BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior
Akia Slaughter (Smyrna, Ga.) delivered an impressive performance to pace Alabama A&M women's outdoor track & field as they posted nine Top-10 finishes on the final day of the UAB Spring Invitational on Saturday, April 3.
Slaughter excelled individually as well as part of two relays as she brought home four top three finishes, highlighted by a 2-of-47 performance in the 200-meters (23.93). She added a 3-of-33 outing in the 100-meters with a time of 11.92 and helped the 4x400 relay to a 2-of-9 finish (3:50.87) and the 4x100 relay to a 3-of-8 with a mark of 47.27.
"This meet overall was intense for me mentally," said Slaughter. "I knew I had a goal and that I had to really leave everything out on the track to achieve it. With COVID-19 ruining the last outdoor season I knew I had something to prove. I've had a successful season so far so I wanted to keep that same energy, to apply that same pressure for not only myself but for my competition. The fight isn't over."
Joining her on the 4x400 were sophomore
Fabiona Jackson-Jenkins (Montgomery, Ala.), senior
Terion Davis (Lakeland, Fla.) and junior
Danielle Chambers (Atlanta, Ga.) while Jackson-Jenkins and Davis paired with junior
Precious Haynes (Richmond, Calif.) on the 4x100.
