Story No. 10: Baseball Delivers DI Era Record-Tying Seven-Game Win Streak
Under the leadership of first-year head coach
Elliott Jones, Alabama A&M baseball wrote their names in the program's Division I history books over the course of the 2021 season.
Â
Before that, however, the Bulldogs would take care of two things on March 19 in their home opener. Junior pitcher
Jose Figueroa (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) threw seven shutout innings and struck out 12 to deliver
Jones' first head coaching victory, a 9-2 decision over Alcorn State.
Â
Figueroa would be the other highlight from that game as his performance earned him
Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Co-Pitcher of the Week, the first for the program since Oakland Athletics' signee Brandon Marsonek picked one up in 2017.
Â
The Bulldogs would hit their stride, and do so at an historic pace, beginning with a four-game home series against Mississippi Valley State from April 16-18. They would
open with a 3-1 victory over the Delta Devils before delivering
a 21-6 blowout win and 10-9 nail biter on the middle day of the series. They then closed with a
narrow 8-7 victory on April 18 to make it four in a row.
Â
In order to continue that streak A&M would need to master a team they lost a home series to just a month prior – and do so on the road. They headed to Lorman, Mississippi for a three-game set against Alcorn State and proceeded to
deliver a 12-5 victory on April 22.
Â
After pulling out a 5-2 decision the following day to extend to a six-game win streak, the Bulldogs would
make it seven with a thrilling 4-3 victory in the back half of a doubleheader on April 23.
Â
That win equaled the program's Division I Era win streak at seven, matching the 2010 team and producing the longest such stretch since the 1996 club won eight in a row.
Â
Performances like those would also deliver another benchmark for the program as they
returned to the SWAC Tournament for the first time since 2017. Hosted right down the road in Madison, Alabama at Toyota Field, home of the Double-A affiliate Rocket City Trash Pandas, A&M challenged both Grambling and Texas Southern before closing out a 2021 campaign that saw firsts, returns and record-setting moments.
