Box Score 2 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Alabama A&M (0-11, 0-0 SWAC) dropped a pair of matches on the final day of the Indiana Invitational, falling 3-0 to SEC power Mississippi (10-0, 0-0 SEC) and Chicago State (8-4, 0-0 WAC) in NCAA Division I women's volleyball action on Friday, September 17. The Bulldogs fell 25-14, 25-9, 25-9 to Ole Miss and 25-18, 25-22 and 27-25 to the Cougars.
Ole Miss 3, Alabama A&M 0
The Rebels opened with an 11-3 run before the Bulldogs had a mini 3-0 burst to narrow the gap to 11-6. Ole Miss would then score eight of the next 12 points to stretch their lead to 19-10 before A&M would earn consecutive points. Mississippi would then go on a 6-2 run to close out the set, 25-14.
Ole Miss started the second frame with a 7-3 run before unleashing a 10-0 stretch to push the score to 17-3 before wrapping up the set by scoring eight of the next 12 points to win 25-9.
In the final set, the Rebels took a 10-4 lead before the Bulldogs earned consecutive points to narrow the gap to four. This would be the closest they would get as Mississippi would then unleash a 13-0 run to push the score to 23-6.
A&M would score back-to-back points before Ole Miss scored the last two points of the game to win the set and match 25-9
Freshman middle hitter
Samaurya Mahone (Duncanville, Texas) led the Bulldogs in kills with three while freshman outside hitter
Kori Mills (Hiram, Ga), senior outside hitter
Ashley Jordan (Bridgetown, Barbados) and freshman middle hitters
Ryann Tolbert (Southfield, Mich.) and
Alondrah Santana (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) had two apiece.
Sophomore setter
Isis Mitchell (Plano, Texas) fueled the offense with eight assists and freshman defensive specialist
Abigail Cangelosi (Huntsville, Ala.) chipped in with five digs. Senior defensive specialist
Maci Battle (Meridanville, Ala.) added four digs to round out the top performers.
Julia Dyess and Lauren Thompson both had 11 kills for the Rebels while Aubrey Sultemeier and Sasha Ratliff had 10 and six, respectively. Breylee Linder had 20 assists and Thompson and Dyess lead the defense with six digs each.
Chicago State 3, Alabama A&M 0
The first set started with both teams tied at four apiece before Chicago State unleashed a 9-0 rally to push the score to 13-4. A&M would respond by scoring eight of the next 12 points to be trailing by five before a 7-3 burst by the Cougars extended their margin to 24-15.
The Bulldogs produce a mini 3-0 run before Chicago State made the last point to end the set with a 25-18 victory.
AAMU built a 15-12 lead to open the second set before the Cougars used a 5-0 burst to take a two point lead. From there they would extend their lead to 22-19 scoring five of the next nine points before the Bulldogs had a 3-0 run but Chicago State would then score the last three points and win 25-22.
The final frame started like the second - ultra competitive - and would see the teams deadlock at 17 before the Cougars scored three straight to pull ahead to extend the margin to 20-17. The Bulldogs would respond with a 7-3 run to overtake CSU but could not hold it as they surrendered four of the next five points to fall by a narrow 27-25 margin.
Freshmen middle hitters
Sydney Morant (Columbus, Ohio), Mahone and Tolbert led the Bulldogs with 12, seven and six kills, respectively. Mitchell ignited the offense with 22 assists and chipped in with six digs while Cangelosi had five to round out the top performers.
Yanlis Feliz had 13 kills for the Cougars while Nailah Jones notched 10 and Oztuna Zeynep fueled the offense with 21 assists. Andrea Calderon lead the defense with eight digs while Jones and Feliz had five apiece.
The Bulldogs will return to the court on Tuesday, September 22 for their home opener as they battle against in-state rival North Alabama. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
