Alabama A&M Football Redirects From St. Louis For Match Up With Arkansas-Pine Bluff

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M (2-4, 2-1 SWAC) football knew they would need to go on the road to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-4, 0-3 SWAC) following back-to-back home contests, they just thought it would be to St. Louis, Missouri. Following the cancellation of the HBCU River City Classic, that game is now set to take place in Pine Bluff, Arkansas at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 16.

WHERE TO WATCH
Fans can follow all the action on the UAPB Sports Network as well as through live stats and can catch up on all the action following the game on www.AAMUSports.com, the official online home of Alabama A&M Athletics.

DOUBLE, DOUBLE, BULLDOGS TOILED AND CAUSED GOOD TROUBLE
You don't want to have to come from behind later after holding a double-digit lead but the Bulldogs proved they could do just that in a thrilling 37-31 double overtime victory over Grambling on Saturday, October 8.

A&M would lead 7-3 after one and trail 10-7 at the break before coming back to life in the third with 10 points to pull back ahead 17-10. The clubs would then trade TDs to make it a 24-17 advantage for the Bulldogs with 10:21 remaining before the Tigers went 71 yards in 10 plays and 3:13 to tie it up with 29 seconds to go and set the stage for overtime.

That first extra session would see GSU connect on a 26-yard touchdown strike to take a 31-24 lead but redshirt-freshman quarterback Quincy Casey (Memphis, Tenn.) hit senior wideout Isiah Cox (Jasper, Ala.) from 16 yards out to knot it back up, this time at 31-31.

They would get the ball to start the second OT and would repeat that effort as a 20-yard grab by redshirt-senior tight end Kendric Johnson (New Market, Ala.) set up a two-yard plunge from sophomore running back Donovan Eaglin (Houston, Texas) for a 37-31 advantage following a missed two-point attempt.

Grambling would find themselves facing a fourth-and-game after three straight incompletions and then senior linebacker Dre Terry (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) drilled the QB when he stepped up in the pocket, ending all thoughts of a comeback and locking down the six-point victory.

Eaglin led the way with 126 yards on the ground and a pair of scores while Casey was 17-of-25 for 188 yards with two passing TDs. Senior safety JaBraun McNeal (Gadsden, Ala.) led the defense with nine tackles, five solo and 1.5 for loss, to go with a seven yard sack and Terry notched five stops, two for loss and the game-ending sack.

ABOUT THE GAME
Previously slated to be at the former home of the National Football League's (NFL) St. Louis Rams, The Dome at America's Center, the game was moved to Pine Bluff on Wednesday, October 12. Even with the move it will still allow the Bulldogs to have an advance preview of "playing on Sunday's" with kickoff remaining at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 16.

The teams come into the game with plenty of recent history between them, including a massive 52-24 victory for the Bulldogs to close last season and the instant classic of that was the de facto Spring 2021 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) National Championship played between the two clubs.

The trip also marks four straight games away from home for A&M as they will not return to Louis Crews Stadium until the regular season finale against Texas Southern on November 19.

RACKING UP THE HONORS (SEASON EDITION)
While more than half the roster is new the returnees are well known and have racked up the preseason recognition.

That started with three All-SWAC Preseason selections as senior running back Gary Quarles (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and senior wide receiver Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim (Miramar, Fla.) earned Second-Team while junior offensive lineman Carson Vinson (Cary, N.C.) was selected to the Second-Team.

Quarles and Ibrahim would add to the mantle with the latter picking up Stats Perform FCS Preseason Third-Team All-American honors while both he and the diminutive tailback were named to the BOXTOROW Preseason All-American Team.

Ibrahim is also now a 10-time All-American following his most recent honor, a Second-Team selection by Hero Sports and both he and Quarles have been named to the prestigious Deacon Jones Award Watch list representing the top player from a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

In-season, Eaglin cracked the seal on the awards with his SWAC and BOXTOROW National Player of the Week honors on Monday, October 3.

MORE THAN 70-PERCENT OF A SEASON IN THE SPOTLIGHT
The Bulldogs are a popular choice to hit the airwaves in 2022 as more than 70-percent of their season will be on national television.

In an 11-game schedule, A&M will be featured six times by traditional networks, beginning with CBS Sports Network carrying the season-opening UAB contest. Also being picked up will be Troy (ESPN3), Florida A&M (ESPN+), Alabama State (ESPN Networks), Mississippi Valley State (ESPNU) and Jackson State (ESPN+).

That slate plays to the fan that can't get to all the road games as every single one of those six games are on the road. A&M will also see a pair of home games aired on the new endeavor that is HBCUGo, with those being the October 8 game against Grambling and the regular season finale with Texas Southern on November 19.

ABOUT THE ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF UNIVERSITY GOLDEN LIONS
UAPB was expecting to be away from home for three straight games but now has a quick about face with an impromptu home outing.

The Golden Lions enter having dropped four in a row after winning their first two over NCAA Division II Lane (48-42 on 9/3) and non-NCAA opponent North American (76-3 on 9/10). Since then they have fallen at Oklahoma State (63-7 on 9/17), Alcorn State (38-21 on 9/24) and Southern (59-3 on 9/24) before dropping a 24-17 decision at home to Texas Southern (10/8).

LET'S GET SERIE-OUS
Dating back to November 21, 1998, the Bulldogs hold a commanding 18-7 series lead over Arkansas-Pine Bluff since joining the NCAA Division I ranks at the turn of this century.

The Bulldogs have won six of the last seven meetings, most recently a 52-24 decimation of the Golden Lions on Senior Day on November 20, 2021. The previous meeting was an instant classic that was the 40-33 SWAC Championship victory on May 1, 2021. A&M suffered a 52-34 loss on September 7, 2019 but prior to that won four in a row from September 26, 2015 through November 3, 2018.

Series Flashback
Of the 25 games in the Division I Era series history there is one that springs to mind right away for the Series Flashback – that May 1, 2021 contest that gave Alabama A&M their first SWAC Championship since 2006, first undefeated season since 1966 and the first HBCU National Title in school history.

Check out the full recap to get the entire story of not only one of the most impressive games in the series history but the history of the program.
