Alabama A&M Women's Basketball Set To Host Grambling In Bid To Strengthen SWAC Positioning

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – With two games left in the regular season, Alabama A&M (13-13, 11-5 SWAC) women's basketball looks to strengthen their position in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and tie the program's longest NCAA Division I win streak as they host Grambling (12-15, 9-7 SWAC) on Thursday, March 3.

The Bulldogs enter in a three-way tie with Southern and Alabama State but hold the tie-breaker with ASU based on point differential. That becomes paramount in a two-team tie-breaker but a three-way tie would go to the best record against tied teams (i.e. A&M vs. Southern and ASU).

A win against the Tigers would greatly uncomplicate the seeding picture and then leave Alabama A&M needing just a win over Southern to clinch the No. 2 seed regardless of what anyone else does. Both the Bulldogs and Alabama State will play Grambling and Southern this weekend, leaving the three-way scenario unclear at this point.

Alabama A&M comes in riding a five-game win streak that dates back to a 53-47 victory over Mississippi Valley State (2/12) and has also downed Arkansas-Pine Bluff (58-50 on 2/14), Bethune-Cookman (68-54 on 2/19), Florida A&M (68-57 on 2/21) and ASU (76-68 on 2/26).

It is just the third time the program has won at least five in a row in the past decade, however, all three have come in the past three seasons. They won five in a row from January 9 through February 8, 2021 and six straight from February 3-24, 2020. The latter equaled the program Division I record set from February 11 through March 1, 2012 (later vacated) and January 20 through February 5, 2007.

A&M's last loss this season, however, came at the hands of Grambling, 81-72 on February 7. The Tigers then proceeded to lose their next three on the road, falling 96-86 to Texas Southern (2/12), 71-63 to Prairie View (2/14) and 59-49 to Southern (2/19) before notching victories against the SWAC's two new Florida members. They downed FAMU 84-59 on February 26 and Bethune-Cookman 83-73 on February 28.

ALL-TIME SERIES
The matchup is a familiar and tightly contested one for both teams with the Tigers holding a narrow 18-15 advantage in 33 meetings since the 2006-07 season.

Last season the teams met in back-to-back games at the end of the year with Grambling posting a slim 72-68 victory in Louisiana on March 6 before claiming a SWAC Tournament Quarterfinal five days later by a 58-50 score. Most recently GSU posted an 81-72 decision in Grambling on February 7.

In terms of winning streaks in the series, A&M delivered seven straight from January 7, 2008 through January 4, 2011 while GSU's longest run was six consecutive from March 7, 2015 to January 1, 2018.
