HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M (14-13, 12-5 SWAC) women's basketball is looking to do something they have only done once, officially, as they host Southern (13-15, 11-6) in their regular season finale on Saturday, March 5.
The Bulldogs are currently tied with Alabama State but hold the tie-breaker for the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament entering the final game of the regular season. The math is simple – win and secure the No. 2 seed for just the second time in program history. A loss would open the door for ASU, Southern and Texas Southern to take the spot.
Should A&M lock down the second spot it would be just the second time with the only other coming in the 2004-05 season. The 2011-12 club did so as well but those records have since been vacated by the NCAA.
Additionally, Alabama A&M is pursuing the most SWAC wins in program history as well as the longest win streak since moving to NCAA Division I win.
The Bulldogs have won six in a row, notching a 53-47 victory over Mississippi Valley State (2/12) and defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff (58-50 on 2/14), Bethune-Cookman (68-54 on 2/19), Florida A&M (68-57 on 2/21), ASU (76-68 on 2/26) and Grambling (55-51 on March 3).
A six-game win streak has happened just three other times in the program's Division I history, most recently from February 3-24, 2020. The 2006-07 team was the first to do so from January 20 through February 5, 2007 while the 2011-12 team won six straight from February 11 through March 1, 2012 but those wins have since been vacated.
Southern enters the weekend coming off of a disappointing 64-46 loss at Alabama State (3/3) following a three-game win streak over Grambling (59-49 on 2/19), Bethune-Cookman (65-51 on 2/26) and Florida A&M (66-43 on 2/28).
ALL-TIME SERIES
The teams will be meeting for the 34
th time since the 2005-06 season, with the
Jaguars holding a commanding 26-8 margin in that time. The Bulldogs won in Baton Rouge last season by a 78-76 margin on February 24, 2021 for a mini two-game win streak that snapped a 14-game losing streak to Southern. The Jaguars got the better of AAMU earlier this season, however, with a 68-58 decision on February 5.
CALLING IT A CAREER – BUT NOT QUITE YET
Following the game, Alabama A&M will recognize their three seniors of center
Jada Clowers (Macon, Ga.), forward
Dariauna Lewis (Omaha, Neb.) and guard
Nigeria Jones (Lincoln, Neb.). That triumvirate will be playing their final game at Elmore Gymnasium but will be advancing to the 2022 SWAC Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama next week.
