Lewis and Jones Make History For Alabama A&M Women's Basketball With Historic All-SWAC Selections

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In what has already been a record-setting year for the program, Alabama A&M women's basketball continues to raise the bar with multiple All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) selections for a third straight season as announced by the league on Tuesday, March 8.

Senior forward Dariauna Lewis (Omaha, Neb.) and graduate guard Nigeria Jones (Lincoln, Neb.) each earned Second-Team honors, making this the first time in program history with three straight years of at least two honorees.

The two selections match each of the past two seasons as well as the 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns while six in the past three seasons accounts for nearly a third of the team's 19 all-time honors at the Division I level.

This year's honors also tie the most the Bulldogs have ever had in one year while Lewis becomes the first individual to earn three All-SWAC selections in a career. She surpasses Whiquitta Tobar (2010-11, 2011-12) and LaShowann Smith (2001-02, 2003-04) for that honor and adds to First-Team recognitions in 2019-20 and 2020-21 while Jones earns the first of her career.

DARIAUNA LEWIS – SECOND-TEAM
Lewis has appeared in all 28 games, starting 27 while posting averages of 14.6 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.2 blocks, 1.1 assists and is averaging nearly a steal per game. On the season she is also shooting .489 from the field (154-of-315) and .717 (99-of-138) at the foul line.

In 2021-22 she has earned an impressive four Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) weekly awards, two of the Player of the Week variety and a pair of Impact Player of the Week honors.

She has recorded 17 double-doubles, including five straight at one point, to go with 12 games of at least 12 rebounds and a 26 point, 18 board effort at Texas Southern (1/22). Lewis also added 13 points and 19 caroms against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2/14) and 20 points and 17 rebounds (10 offensive) vs. Alcorn State (1/8).

Nationally, she ranks No. 7 in defensive rebounds per game (8.2), 12th in rebounds per game, 14th in double-doubles and 27th in blocks per game. In terms of SWAC statistical rankings she leads the league in rebounding, is second in blocks and third in field goal percentage.

She is also the only SWAC women's basketball player to earn College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District and is the only member of a Division I HBCU institution to do so this year. That accomplishment puts her in line for Academic All-America honors for the second straight year.

NIGERIA JONES – SECOND-TEAM
Graduate guard Nigeria Jones (Lincoln, Neb.) has been a force throughout the 2021-22 season, averaging 15.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game in 34.5 minutes per game.

In terms of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) statistical rankings she is second in minutes, fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.26) and sixth in assists per game. She was named the BOXTOROW National Player of the Week on February 28 and has been named the league's Impact Player of the Week and Player of the Week once each this season.

On the year she has played in all 28 games, starting 27 and registering double-digit scoring in 21 of those. Jones has also reached at least 20 points nine times, led by a career-high 35 in a 76-68 victory over rival Alabama State and 28 points, six assists and a pair of steals at Samford and 28 points, five steals and four assists vs. Southern.

She has also produced 17 games of at least three assists and 15 with multiple steals. Among those were an eight-assist game vs. Florida A&M and seven assists at Grambling. Those performances have led Alabama A&M to the No. 2 seed in the SWAC.

Lewis, Jones and the Bulldogs return to action as they head to Birmingham, Alabama for the 2022 SWAC Tournament beginning on Wednesday, March 9. They will face No. 7 seed Grambling at 11 a.m.
