Alabama A&M Softball Set To Host Mississippi Valley State On Senior Weekend; Series Shifted To Four Games

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M (12-24, 6-14 SWAC) softball will make one last push to qualify for the 2022 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament as they host Mississippi Valley State (11-22, 9-11 SWAC) from April 29-30 in a series that will determine if either club gets into the postseason.

That will also now be a four-game series with a doubleheader being added to Friday, April 29 to makeup the third game of the road series that was postponed due to severe weather on March 12. MVSU will be the home team for the 12 p.m. game as it replaces their home game. The teams will then play the back half of the twin bill at approximately 2 p.m. before finishing the regular season with the regularly scheduled 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 30.

The latter will also serve as Senior Day as the Bulldogs recognize Lisabelle Hansell (Hayward, Calif.), Rachael McKinney (Birmingham, Ala.) and Alyssa Lopez (San Leandro, Calif.) prior to the first game.

A&M would need to sweep the series to pass the Devilettes, who are up by three games in the standings, and to have a chance to catch rival Alabama State who is 10-11. The Bulldogs hold the tie-breaker over the Hornets as a result of their victory in the season series. ASU will play three games against Florida A&M.

Alabama A&M comes in having dropped two of three at Jackson State last weekend, falling 6-3 on April 22, winning the first game 9-4 on April 23 and dropping a 6-5 decision in the finale. MVSU is coming off a series win over FAMU, taking the first two games 5-4 and 10-6 before falling 12-9.

SERIES HISTORY
Dating back to the 2005 season, MVSU holds a commanding 43-12 advantage in the all-time series, including 23 of those in Itta Bena, Mississippi. The majority of those came more than seven years ago with a 15-game win streak by the Devilettes from February 25, 2007 through April 25, 2010 and an 11-game stretch from March 26, 2011 through April 19, 2014.

The Bulldogs won three in a row with a sweep of the series last season but the Devilettes took the first two this year, claiming 2-1 and 4-3 walk-off victories on March 11 in Itta Bena.
