BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama A&M junior second baseman
Venice Sanders (Birmingham, Ala.) has been named Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Softball Hitter of the Week as announced by the league on Wednesday, April 6.
Sanders had the best week of her career, slugging 1.400, hitting .400 and posting a .400 on-base percentage over the course of three games. In those contests she belted three homeruns along with a double for eight RBIs and scored four runs while going 4-for-10.
Facing her old school, rival Alabama State, Sanders reintroduced herself with a 2-for-4 day that saw her rip a double and homerun to produce five RBIs and a run scored in a 12-7 victory. She would be held to an 0-for-3 day in the night cap on Friday, April 1 as the Bulldogs were limited to five hits as a team.
She would more than make up for it in the series finale as she went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of runs. Both of those hits, however, cleared the fence to give her three homeruns on the weekend and lead A&M to an 11-1 blowout victory to claim the series.
On the year Sanders is hitting .333, slugging .815 and has four homeruns against just four strikeouts in 27 at bats. Had she played in enough games to qualify, she would lead the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in slugging and tie for the second most homeruns.
Alabama A&M softball and Sanders are back in action from April 8-9 when they host SWAC newcomer Bethune-Cookman. First pitch of the doubleheader portion on Friday, April 8 is set for 12 p.m. with the finale at the same time on Saturday, April 9.
