JACKSON, Miss. | The Alabama A&M University volleyball team came into the weekend with a seven-game winning streak and walked away from Sunday's Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Round up with a pair of four-set wins against Texas Southern and Southern 3-1, increasing their winning streak to nine at the Lee E. Williams Assembly Center.
Alabama A&M 3, Texas Southern 1
Scores: 16-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-20
Caitlyn Shaw, who hit .625, paced the Alabama A&M offense with a team-leading 19 kills, while Saldy Amparo Smith had 12 kills in the four-set matchup.
Grace Tapscott had 24 assists, while
Mackenzie Jefferson had 19 assists, respectively.
Michell Jerez led the defense with 17 digs, followed by
Bailey Duckett and Amparo-Smith with five.
The Bulldogs (10-16, 9-3 SWAC) had 55 kills in 126 total attacks, with 45 digs and six solo blocks.
Texas Southern tallied 45 kills and a hit percentage of 223. In addition, the Tigers recorded 44 digs and had seven total blocks.
Kennedy Reed led Texas Southern with 12 kills, Ava Ray had 21 assists, and defensively, Britney Ong led the digs category with 19.
Alabama A&M 3, Southern 1
Scores: 25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 25-19
Alabama A&M prevailed over Southern in its second matchup of the day, winning in four sets.
Samaurya Mahone and
Caitlin Shaw led the Bulldogs offense, each with 12 digs.
Mackenzie Jefferson added 20 assists, followed by
Grace Tapscott with 18.
Saldy Amparo-Smith led the team defensively with ten digs.
The Bulldogs finished with 50 kills in 118 total attacks with 50 digs, 43 assists, and a team-high 14 blocks.
Southern registered 50 kills with a hitting percentage of .185, 43 assists, and two total blocks.
Jordan Felix led the Jaguar's offense by registering a triple-double of ten kills, 18 assists, and 11 digs, while Elise Doomes had ten kills as well. Iyanah Taylor dished out 20 assists. Defensively, Alissa Santoyo led with 18 digs.
