HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ^__ Alabama A&M softball is preparing for their third neutral site classic to start the year this weekend as they travel south to take part in the HBCU Heritage Classic, hosted by Alabama State at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
 
The Bulldogs (2-5, 0-0 SWAC) picked up their two wins during the opening weekend against Grambling and Xavier (La.), before dropping all four games in the Roar City Classic last weekend in Nashville.
 
The team is batting .295 at the plate so far on the year, scoring 37 runs on 57 hits, with senior Venice Sanders (Birmingham, Ala.) leading the way so far in batting average (.526), runs batted in (12), hits (10), and home runs (3). Meanwhile, three other batters hold averages above .300 with Faith Cross (Pulaski, Tenn.) holding an average of .389, followed by Allyson Riches (San Diego, Calif.), and Abigail Barnes (Huntsville, Ala.) at .348 and .333 respectively.
 
Florida A&M is coming into the classic at 2-9, dropping eight straight games. The two wins by the Rattlers both took place during the season-opening Mercer Tournament as they beat Hampton (Feb. 10) and Mercer (Feb. 12). Their last matchup was a midweek non-conference game against North Florida on Wednesday, dropping in a tight contest, 1-0, inside the Seminole Softball Complex. 
 
South Carolina State enters weekend play at 0-3 after participating in the 2023 Spartan Classic where they fell at home to George Mason and Holy Cross on Saturday, February 18, before concluding the play against Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday, February 19. As a team, they are batting .253 on the year, totaling 19 hits on 75 at-bats ,while their opponents are hitting .333 from the plate, with 24 total hits and 16 runs.
 
The Lady Jaguars are currently 1-8 and are coming off their first win on the season after defeating Jackson State, 5-3, to close out the Mardi Gras Classic last weekend. Prior to last weekend, Southern dropped four games in the NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Florida before falling to Southern Mississippi on February 15.
