THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University baseball team opens the 2025 season this weekend in Houston, Texas at the HBCU Cactus Jack Classic.
Alabama A&M is coming off a 13-38 overall and 9-20 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) mark in 2024 and replace several key pieces off last year's team, including top hitter
Tristan Curless.
The Bulldogs return veteran coach
Louis Whitlow, who takes over the reigns as the interim head coach this season and bolster a staff feature pitching coach
Mark Hernandez, along with graduate assistant coaches
Ty Hill and
Chevalier Dorris.
"I think we've got a great staff and I am excited for this upcoming season," Whitlow said. "We start off against three conference teams, all of which we have three-game series with during the regular season. This will be a challenge for us, playing against three teams in the HBCU Cactus Jack Classic that competed last year in the SWAC Baseball Tournament, including the team that won it all in Grambling State."
The Bulldogs open the weekend against Prairie View A&M, a team that finished third in the SWAC West standings last year. The Panthers are coming off a 28-27 overall mark and a 17-10 record in the conference. First pitch against PVAMU is set for 3 p.m. from Daikin Park.
AAMU will play Jackson State on Saturday. The Tigers finished fourth last season in the East Division. First pitch for Saturday's game is at 11 a.m.
The Bulldogs wrap up play at the HBCU Cactus Jack Classic at 11 a.m. on Sunday against Grambling State. GSU finished second during the regular season in the SWAC West, but caught fire in the conference tournament, winning the championship and advancing to the NCAA Division I Tournament.
After the HBCU Cactus Jack Classic, Alabama A&M will have one day of rest before traveling to Birmingham, Ala. to face UAB on Tuesday. First pitch against the Blazers is scheduled for 4 p.m.
