Box Score COVINGTON, Ga | Alabama A&M (6-1) softball team saw four Bulldogs score in the sixth inning to solidify a 13-8 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday morning.
UMES led off competition with a single to left field from Jaycee Holt who then stole second and third base to get in scoring position. After a pair of outs, Clarke Calvin drew a walk, stole second and passed a ball to Holt who scored on the wild pitch.
The Bulldogs quickly responded, adding two runs at the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Ariana Montiel that scored Charity Bibbs to take the lead. The game went scoreless until the bottom of the third when Bibbs homered to center field. Neither team scored in fourth frame, but at the bottom of the fifth, an inside of the park home run from Montiel gave the Bulldogs two more runs to balloon their control 5-1. Jalia Callaway doubled down the infield line, allowing Callia Rooks to advance to second and Heaven Bibbs to score to finish the inning.
The Hawks threatened the Bulldog lead, scoring four runs in the fourth inning to level the game. At the bottom of the frame, H. Bibbs doubled to center field, allowing both Susanna Cruit and Allyson Riches to score and the Bulldogs to regain control. At the bottom of the fifth, Maria Ocrospoma-Figueroa scored to give AAMU a three-run lead.
UMES scored their final two runs in the sixth inning as Lola Meyers led off with a double to advance to third, followed by an RBI single from Makalah Clark. Clark stole second off a bunt from Nola Mountain to come within one of the contest. An offensive explosion from Alabama A&M added four runs to the Bulldog tally to claim the 13-8 victory over the Hawks.
The Bulldogs were set to face Coppin State in the night cap, but technical issues at the stadium cancelled the game. The Bulldogs will face North Carolina A&T in the final contest of the HBCU Softball Invitational at noon on Sunday.
